We like to say you’re cured
When you die of something different
My oncologist told me
And my relief was apparent
I had just finished radiation
Six weeks of constant zapping
Coupled with hormone deprivation
All done with the aim of stopping
A cancerous prostate (I’m over 60)
And we’d done it, PSAs were nil
Testosterone count was lower than that
Tumour was gone, we made it over the hill
Now to work on getting my peeing right
It was fine until I got started on this
Now I can’t pass up a toilet
Or challenge my bladder to hold a piss
Nevertheless, it’s spring and the flowers are out
My boat’s in the water and I’m alive
I could moan and bitch and carry on
But I’m not interested in the survivor jive
We like to say you’re cured
When you die of something different
My oncologist told me
And my relief was apparent
Nobody dies of prostate cancer
Well, very few at least
Still, I’m one of the lucky ones
And my respect for life has increased
