Actor

John studied theatre at Bishop’s University from 1971 to 1973, and then at the Playwrights’ Workshop in Montreal. His instructor at Bishop’s was William B Davis, who later became famous as “cigarette smoking man” on The X Files. John’s professional career began more than 45 years ago with a role in the film “Mousy”, starring Kirk Douglas.

John’s career as a stage director began in Cuernavaca, Mexico, where he ran the Teatro Des Artes de Cuernavaca, an amateur, bilingual theatre company attached to local Anglo-American Arts Centre. There, he produced “The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade” by Peter Weiss, among other plays and festivals.

In 1980, John directed a well-reviewed production of “The Great Nebula in Orion”, by Lanford Wilson, at the Solar Stage Theatre in Toronto.

In 1981, John served as the Artistic Director of The Piggery Playhouse in North Hatley, Quebec, a long-standing fixture in the Canadian summer stock theatre scene. During his season, he produced and directed “Deathtrap” by Ira Levin, “Monsieur Ribadier’s System” by Georges Feydeau and “Returning” by Gaetan Charlesbois.

During this time, John appeared in his only professional stage role, as one of the beach boys in “Night of the Iguana” by Tennessee Williams, at Theatre Plus in Toronto.

In 1984, John directed an Equity Showcase production of “Total Eclipse”, by Christopher Hampton, at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto.

After a hiatus of 20 years, when he didn’t act or direct, John returned to acting, in film and television. His resumé of recent work is attached.
